MI Cable: A History

Heatizon’s Hott-Wire MI cable traces its origins back to 1896 when the first patent for Mineral Insulated Cable was issued. The cable was used on ships and other projects in the years leading up to World War Two when it was used in military equipment. MI cable is very durable and used frequently in powering and controlling critical equipment including nuclear reactors, fire alarms, and emergency systems. The 1930s saw the use of MI cable in Heat Tracing with cable designed specifically for this use entering production in the 1950s.

Installing in Cold Weather

Due to the extreme winter some regions have experienced this year, we are seeing a rising number of roof collapses due to snow load problems.

Many of these are flat roofs on commercial buildings. Our ZMesh and Tuff Cable products are one solution to snow load problems. Easily installed under a variety of roofing materials, including membranes, they can be used to provide drainage paths, melt trouble spots, and keep the roof clear.

Installing in Cold Weather

Winter may be here in force, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the benefits of radiant heat. Many of our products can be installed during the winter. The cold weather is also the perfect time to identify trouble spots and plan ahead for installing during the warmer months.

Our GutterMelt heat trace cable can be installed at temperatures as low as 40° F, making it possible to address any ice dam problems that may arise. Our other deicing products can also be installed, weather permitting.

Our heated driveway systems can also be installed in cold weather. Minimum installation temperatures for concrete or any sealants used should be met.

Any interior work can go ahead as normal on a cold winter day, so get started on those heated floors!
