Snow Melting Systems for existing surfaces
So many times
we have heard the statements, “I wish I had known” or, “do you have something I can drive on?” or, “we just poured the concrete” and, “the asphalt is already down”.
We hear these statements when customers call us during the troubling winter months seeking a solution to their snow problem that melts from their
mind as quickly as the snow does in the spring only to return the next snow season. We do have a solution that we have developed and recommended for snow melting applications on existing surfaces. The retrofit system using our low voltage Tuff Cable or line voltage Hott-Wire MI Cable products works wonders.
Retrofit Snow Melting Systems
How does a retrofit snow melting system work?
Spray washing retrofit
Heatizon has been
recommending its retrofit snow melting systems since 1979. It works by cutting grooves into the surface at specified widths and depths allowing the heating element to be placed in the bottom of the grooves rather than embedding them in a new slab or sand bed. Saw cuts are power washed to remove residue prior to cable installation. Once the cable has been placed in the groove, a backer rod is placed over the cable to insulate
the cut which forces the heat to the sides, and finally the application is finished off by applying highway grade sealant into the grooves to seal them off. These systems are designed based on snow melting data by region from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Heating elements are spaced on appropriate centers to generate the required heat output specified by ASHRAE.
