<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our next distributor spotlight is here! We spent some time with Russell Hacker from <a href="http://www.comfortradiant.com/">Comfort Radiant Heating</a> to talk about Heatizon Products in the Northeast. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A Heatizon distributor since 2005, Comfort Radiant is headquartered in Clifton Park, NY. For over a decade Comfort Radiant Heating has sold, designed and installed radiant heating systems throughout the Northeast. While Russell primarily serves New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts, Comfort Radiant supplies materials to contractors and homeowners throughout the United States.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">&#8220;A Full Service Radiant Supplier&#8221;</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We are a full service radiant supplier. From original design and layout through installation of floor warming and primary heating systems, surface snow melting and roof deicing systems” says Russell. In addition to the design and install work Comfort Radiant directly performs, they also offer onsite consulting and installation training for contractors working with Heatizon products. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we at Heatizon Systems celebrate our 20th anniversary, we recognize that we would not be where we are now without our wonderful distributors. As part of commemorating this milestone, we would like to feature and highlight each of our distributors over the year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This month, we sat down with Shawn Wright, Sales Manager at <a href="http://www.warmquest.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Warmquest</a>, to talk about our oldest and largest distributor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Located just outside of Salt Lake City, UT, Warmquest began selling, installing and servicing Heatizon products in 1998. In the past 18 years, Warmquest has worked with clients across North America to provide Heatizon products for projects large and small.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Warmquest is an excellent example of the service and expertise offered by our distributors. “Having been involved in the industry and with the Heatizon product for so long, we have acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience. We strive to use that knowledge and experience to better assist our clients and help make their projects even better” Shawn says.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The team at Warmquest puts this knowledge to good use, contributing assistance and expertise to projects from start to finish. Shawn continues “We enjoy working side by side with design professionals as they look to incorporate Heatizon products into their design. We have found a lot of value in being involved with the contractors who implement the designs provided by the design professionals… Our experience has allowed us over the years to provide effective and unparallelled installation support to installers on thousands of projects.” This support extends after the installation, as Warmquest continues to be a resource for any questions about the system.</p>

Nails or staples to hold the hardwood covering may be driven directly through the ZMesh as long as the nails or staples do not come in contact with any other metal object.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Allow the Hardwood to acclimate to the humidity level by bringing in the Hardwood several weeks before installation. This will minimize dimensional changes due to moisture. Install the ZMeah Heating Element to the subfloor and run a continuous continuity check to make sure the<a href="https://www.heatizon.com/radiant-zmesh"> Zmesh</a> is not damaged or shorting to something conductive. Let the System run for 2 to 3 days before nailing or stapling the Hardwood to the subfloor. It is very important to check with the manufacturer of the Hardwood before installing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Flooring installed over Radiant Heat should never have a surface temperature exceeding 85 degrees. The surface temperature of the floor is controlled by the M321RS Programmable Thermostat with a floor sensor – 7 Day – (4) programmable period per day. The thermostat has a maximum temperature setting of 90 degrees. The system only will come on when the temperature falls 2 degrees below the temperature you set it at. If you set you’re Programmable Thermostat at 72 degrees and the temperature falls to 70 degrees the system will come on until the temperature reaches 72 degrees. The <a href="https://www.heatizon.com/">Heatizon</a> System does not run 24 hours – 7 days a week. Ask you your Hardwood Supplier about heat from sunlight affecting the Hardwood. The temperature from sunlight could reach temperatures above 85 degrees.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Steve Love, a Salt Lake resident, is the owner of Hidden springs Ranch, a multi million dollar adventure resort located high in the hills east of Nephi in central Utah. His lodge was built from the ground up, using the finest materials available, including wood floors, tile and beautiful stone areas.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To bring comfort to the floors, Love installed an <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/" target="_blank">in-floor radiant heating system</a>. “I wanted a heating system that would provide my guests with the most comfortable available, but that wasn’t too complex and didn’t require a lot of maintenance,” Love says.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hidden Springs Ranch heats its 7,500 square feet of flooring with a state-of-the-art, low voltage heating system manufactured locally by <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/" target="_blank">Heatizon Systems</a>, LLC. <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/" target="_blank">Heatizon</a> uses what it calls “<a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/radiant-zmesh" target="_blank">ZMesh</a>,” a bronze wire mesh used to conduct low voltage electricity throughout the floors. According to Mike Bench, the manager of the local <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/" target="_blank">Heatizon</a> installation team, “The <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/radiant-zmesh" target="_blank">ZMesh</a> is flat, almost like a screen door material, and is so simple that it can be stapled down to a wood sub floor or glued to a concrete slab. “Nearly every type of floor covering available can be placed on top of it, including tile, hardwood, carpet and slate. This makes the system easy to retrofit into existing homes and ideal for finishing a cold basement.” The flexibility and simplicity of <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/" target="_blank">Heatizon</a> system, he continues, are not the only benefits. “The system’s solid state design with no moving parts means that maintenance is minimal. Many of the systems that have been installed in the last twenty years have never even needed a service call,” Bench says.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="color: #000000;">The low voltage aspect also makes the system 100 percent efficient. The low voltage also makes it one of the safest systems available on the market, conforming to UL standards. After a fun day of snowmobiling and snowshoeing, our guests tell us they absolutely love walking around in their stocking feet, just to feel the warmth,” Love says. “In the mornings, when they get out of bed or the shower, they tell us it’s so nice when their bare feet meet warm, comfortable floors instead of a cold surface.” <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/" target="_blank">Heatizon Systems</a> manufactures a complete line of quality low voltage products for roof deicing, snow melt in driveways and sidewalks, and its newest system, the “<a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heatizon.com/radiant-heat-floorizwarm" target="_blank">Floorizwarm</a>” for smaller areas. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">I received a telephone call this morning from a prospective customer wanting to<br>understand the difference between Heat Trace, Heat Tape, and <a title="Guttermelt" href="https://www.heatizon.com/radiant-heat-guttermelt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GutterMelt</a>. After<br>explaining the differences to him it occurred to me that perhaps others are confused so I<br>decided to write this article.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Heat Trace and Heat Tape are generic terms for a family of electric heating cables that<br>are designed to keep pipes from freezing, maintain the temperature of the contents of<br>pipes and melt snow and ice off of roofs and in drains, rain gutters and downspouts.<br>Some of the products in this family are designed to be installed inside of pipes and others<br>are designed to be wrapped around the outside of pipes, valves, and instrumentation.<br>Obviously the Heat Trace and Heat Tape products designed for rain gutters, downspouts<br>and on roofs are designed to be exposed to the elements including the rays from the sun.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within the family of electric heating cables referred to as “Heat Trace” or “Heat Tape”<br>are Constant Wattage cables and Self Regulating cables. As you might have already<br>concluded Constant Wattage cables always put out approximately the same watts per<br>linear foot regardless of the temperature of their surroundings. The wattage output<br>per linear foot of Self Regulating cables on the other hand, varies dramatically as the<br>temperature surrounding the cable changes. As a matter of fact the wattage output of a<br>length of Self Regulating cable may vary as the temperature surrounding the cable varies<br>along its length.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The various brands of Constant Wattage Heat Trace or Heat Tape cables come in many<br>different quality levels and price points and are generally fixed in length. Design<br>longevity, temperature tolerance, and wattage output all dramatically affect quality and<br>price. Within the Constant Wattage segment of Heat Trace or Heat Tape, prices range<br>from less than a dollar to several dollars per foot, and life expectancy ranges from a year<br>or two to 10 or more years. The wattage output of Constant Wattage cables varies from a<br>few watts per foot up to 50 plus watts per foot.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self Regulating cables are generally cut to length in the field products and like Constant<br>Wattage cables they are available in many different quality levels and price points. Like<br>Constant Wattage cables, the quality and price of Self Regulating Heat Trace or Heat<br>is dictated by the design longevity, temperature tolerance, and wattage output. These<br>cables generally have wattage outputs ranging from 3 to 24 plus watts per foot in a<br>certain medium (air, ice, water, etc.) and at a certain temperature.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Given that multiple outputs and many different types of cables are available on the<br>market much is to be gained to contacting an expert in the field when determining which<br>cable will best satisfy the objectives of your project.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">California&#8217;s Building Energy Standards, Title 24, Part 6 allows for the use of electrical radiant floor warming and electrical radiant space heating products whenever said products meet the definition of &#8220;supplemental heating.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So what exactly is &#8220;supplemental heating?&#8221; According to the Building Energy Standards for the state of California &#8220;supplemental heating&#8221; is heating which is: (a) not the primary space conditioning system (defined as that system used in energy compliance analysis); and, (b) installed in an area that is also directly served by the primary space conditioning system. Of course common sense and the Building Energy Standards require that the primary space conditioning system have sufficient capacity to condition the entire building or home.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In other words, anytime the primary space conditioning system does not have sufficient capacity to condition the entire building or home, and/or the primary space conditioning system does not directly serve the space where the electrical radiant floor-warming or electrical radiant space heating product is to be installed, then said products are not considered &#8220;supplemental heating&#8221; and they must be included in the energy performance analysis to comply with the Building Energy Standards. As a result, the energy use of electrical floor warming and space heating products installed in areas such as bathrooms, that do not have supply vents from the primary space conditioning system, must be included in the energy performance standards compliance analysis.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fact is that electric resistance space conditioning is difficult to justify as the primary space heater in California. The reason for this is that California uses source energy as the measurement for efficiency. As a result, even though electric products generally have energy efficiencies of 99 percent or greater, the efficiency of electric radiant floor warming and space heating products are reduced by the inefficiency of generating and delivering the electricity to the point of consumption.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The good news is Californians can enjoy the comfort and cleanliness of electric radiant floor warming and space heating anytime they have a primary system that has sufficient capacity to condition the entire space and the space is directly served by the primary system.</p>
